Merino Wool for Underwear

2 2022 big

Merino wool has long been a staple in base layers and Finnish wardrobes. It is used to make all kinds of garments, from base layers and hats to sweaters and mittens. Now it’s time to introduce merino wool underwear. Anita has embraced this high-quality material with its unparalleled properties, responding to customers’ requests for merino wool sports bras, especially for winter.

This winter, it’s becoming a reality: sports bras lined with merino wool are arriving. These stylish gray sports bras are called PanAlp wool and have a firm support rating on Anita’s support scale. They’re suitable for almost any sport, including winter activities such as skiing and ice skating. The merino wool against your skin is velvety soft and feels so comfortable that you’ll forget you’re wearing a bra—it doesn’t irritate or itch. The mesh material on the outside is breathable and provides support. The wide shoulder straps are also lined with merino wool, making them exceptionally soft and comfortable. A wide, breathable underband adds extra comfort and stays in place without rolling up.

As a material, wool is in a class of its own. This natural material contains no synthetic fibers and has unparalleled properties. Wool is known for its ability to regulate temperature, keeping you warm in winter and cool in summer. It wicks moisture away from the skin and keeps you warm even when wet, making it an excellent material for damp conditions. Wool is breathable: air circulates between its fine fibers, and instead of leaving moisture on the skin, it draws it into the fabric’s outer layers. Merino wool is especially well suited to layers worn next to the skin because it is softer than regular sheep’s wool. It doesn’t feel prickly or itchy to most people, so they can enjoy the benefits of wool directly against their skin. Wool is also an eco-friendly material: it is biodegradable and recyclable, and as a natural fiber, it does not shed harmful microplastics into waterways when washed. Instead of washing merino wool garments, you can often freshen them up by airing them out, as wool has self-cleaning properties. It is also antibacterial and helps neutralize odors. However, merino wool is not entirely without problems and is associated with the practice of mulesing. Mulesing involves removing loose skin from around a sheep’s anus to prevent flies from laying eggs in the folds of skin. The procedure is extremely painful for sheep, and pain relief is not always used. Mulesing is strongly criticized on animal welfare grounds and is often considered unnecessary, as there are other ways to protect sheep from parasites. Many wool producers have already stopped mulesing, and thanks to conscientious consumers, demand for mulesing-free wool is growing, putting pressure on other producers to abandon the practice as well.

Anita takes its environmental footprint seriously and wants to ensure that the materials used in its products are responsibly sourced, as is the entire production chain through to the finished product. That is why the merino wool Anita uses is certified mulesing-free and meets the Responsible Wool Standard (RWS). RWS is a system that ensures responsible practices from sheep farming through to the finished product. To receive RWS certification, a finished product or material must meet all applicable criteria, which are verified by an independent auditor. The standard covers three major areas: animal welfare, land management, and social responsibility. Sheep must not be subjected to mulesing or branding, and they must have free access to water and shade, as well as ventilated barns or other shelters. Land use must be carefully planned to prevent overuse and preserve biodiversity alongside sheep farming. The standard also prohibits excessive pesticide use. Exploitation and child labor are not permitted at any stage of wool production.
